I just finished this biography. Just to let you know, the writer does have an agenda and rates Madison as one of our weakest presidents. The author, Sydney Howard Gay, is an abolitionist who edited several newspapers during the middle 19th century and it is with some of this experience he approaches Madison's life. The book is poorly written. From the beginning he goes into pages and pages of criticizing other authors writings about where Madison was born. He also assumes you have read his works and in several parts he refers to remarks briefly so he can gloss over the issue he is writing about and there are some parts where you have no idea what you are reading. He just assumes you already know about Madison.Gay credits Madison like everybody else as "The Father of the U.S. Constitution." He seems fascinated by the arguments regarding slavery and tonnage and everything else that went into the law. He cites arguments made by lots of other founding fathers. But he only mentions Madison in passing while writing dozens of pages about this historic process. So, I am still wondering just what Madison did to help draft this Constitution.
No mention anywhere of his private life and Dolly is mentioned only in passing with maybe a page or so of her background. Kids? Why or why not? His mother died in 1827. Was he close to her? You don't know. No mention of Dolly's efforts as First Lady and what she did to the White House. He castigates Madison for the War of 1812 and getting us into that war makes Madison a bad president because the people found the war unpopular. The biography mostly stops after the War of 1812 and Gay gives no credit to Madison for the treaty that ended that war. Gay glosses over in a couple of pages of what Madison's life was like after the Presidency by quoting a couple of letters but the book really does not do Madison justice.
In the end, this book has very little historical worth other than to nag Madison for not ending slavery and for Gay to bloviate. If you want to know who Madison was, this is not the book.

Excellent introduction to Madison and his legacy.
The book tells much about the man most known as the father of the US Constitution. His family life, early education, and childhood are all examined, as well as his work drafting the Constitution, and his many correspondences with Thomas Jefferson. It is an easy read, and when finished you feel as if you know the man better than before, although it does raise questions as well as answering them.
First half was interesting, second half really dry. A good intro to Madison. A better and consistant definition and comparison between Federalists, Republicans, and Democrats would be helpful. Good treatment of the issue of states rights and slavery that leads up to the Civil War. 3 1/2 stars.
A little too short
Good introduction to James Madison.
Arrived on time.
This biography is a very dry version of Madison's public servant life. There is virtually nothing about his personal life. Only a very brief descriptions of early childhood and his marriage to Dolly Madison. His congressional career has detail but is very dry and unimaginative writing. Not much to go on about what went into his descions as a Congressman,Secretary of State and then President. When I read a biography of someone I want to come away from the book like I really knew them or at least knew them much better than I did before I picked up the book. I did not feel that way after reading this book. The price is $0.00 on KIndle so you don't feel like you lost much, except the time, while reading it. I do not recommend this book. There must be better ones about Madison available.
