Since the European invasion of St. Croix in 1493 to the present, seven different nations, including the Knights of Malta have claimed sovereignty over St. Croix. Presently it’s the United States of America since 1917 that purchased St. Croix from Demark. Beginning in the 1700’s, Africans were brought to St. Croix as slaves to work in the sugarcane fields. Presently, African descendants are the dominant group residing on St. Croix and English is dominant language spoken. The African and the many European language influences have created a distinguishable and unique English dialect that differs from those in other Caribbean islands. This unique dialect is called Crucian, the same as the people who are born, descendants, or reside on the island of St. Croix.
The author, who himself is Crucian has captured the uniquely diverse Crucian dialect and culture in all of the characters in these six exciting and humorous fictional stories set on St. Croix. The author’s voice with some Crucian undertones narrates the stories in Standard English while the story characters speak in the full Crucian dialect. The glossary at the back of the book translates the Crucian words, sentences and phrases used or spoken by the characters. Each story has its own glossary section in alphabetical order based on the first word of a dialect sentence, or groups of consecutive dialect sentences in the stories.
Readers will encounter the use of unique Crucian phrases such as “deh deh” meaning “is or are there” and “deh yah” meaning “is or are here.” Also the use of “ah” in place of “er” at the end of words, as well as “ah” as a single word meaning “I,” “a,” or “of” depending on how it is being used in a sentence. The liberal use of the letter “h” in writing the author’s interpretation of the Crucian dialect emphasizes the broad pronunciation of words in the dialect, for example, “ih” instead of “it” where the letter “t” is not pronounced or “dih” instead of the, or “wah” instead of “what,” and “dah” that could mean “that”…etc.
The main character Jimbo learns life’s lessons from his experiences with “shahks” (sharks), “dahngkeyz” (donkeys), “joombies” (Jumbies or ghosts), and the people in the crowd, friends and family. These stories feature Jimbo at different stages in his life, as a young boy to being an elderly man making for the subtitle, The Trials and Tribulations of Jimbo.
This book is the first in a series of Crucian Tales books to be released featuring Jimbo as the main fictional character.
